Before Harm

I’ve learned there’s always a moment
before it goes wrong.
A quiet one.
A pause long enough to choose differently.

The wind shifts.
Your footing feels fine, but not perfect.
A branch bends the wrong way,
and a voice in your head says: not yet.

You hear it.
You do.
But you go anyway.

Most lessons don’t start with disaster.
They start with the sound of a door clicking shut behind you.
Most harm isn’t an accident.
It’s a moment ignored.

Maybe that’s what draws me back:
the chance to listen better—
to find the signal in the noise
before it becomes another story.

The line is thin.
Preparation and hubris weigh the same
until you fall.

Only one brings you back.

A Different Hi

Some weeks ask for momentum.
This one asked for a breath.

Here’s a quiet loop I’ve been hearing
about leaving, returning,
and coming back a little changed:

The leaves turn, fall, and green again
a little fuller with each sky.

The ground frosts, softens, and crusts again
a little colder with each day.

We step outside, return, and leave again
a little wiser with each goodbye.

Between freeze and thaw, fall and rise,
a rhythm teaches us how to stay.

Not by sitting, running, or chasing,
but by coming back

with a different hi.

Screenshot of a book excerpt in InDesign showing a passage from Underground Echoes about ropes, knots, trust, and shared awe. The text discusses the responsibility of safety and how fear and wonder are experienced together.

The Responsibility and the Response

The knots? Always mine. Tied, checked, tied again. Every step I speak aloud—not because they need to grasp every detail, but because they deserve to hear how trust is built. How you double-check your own work and still bring in a second set of eyes—because when lives hang from a system, yours aren’t enough.

They never are.

And still—the fear, the challenge, the thrill, and that rare, rare awe—those are shared. Equally. I don’t own those. Nobody does. You just open the door to it and walk through together.
